Plastic Pipe Fittings

Pipe fittings are useful as they allow pipe lines to be fitted together – around the corner, over the ceiling or even under the house. There are two different ways a pipe fitting can connect pipes. The first is by a thread method. Metal pipes are threaded or screwed in order to connect. The second method is the slip fit method. Plastic pipes are usually slipped to larger plastic pipe fittings to fit, but they can also be threaded. Plastic pipe fittings come in various shapes and sizes based on their applications. Some of the pipe fittings include elbow, straight connector, equal tee’s and pipe insert.

Before, plumbers and other “do-it-yourself” enthusiasts were using the traditional copper pipe and pipe fittings in their plumbing and mechanical works. However, these days, the use of thermoplastic or plastic pipe fittings is becoming more and more popular because of the many benefits that it offers. These days, mechanics also use thermoplastic pipe fittings in automotive applications. Let’s take a look at some of the benefits of thermoplastic pipes and fittings.

Plastic pipe fittings are mostly used these days because of their low thermal conductivity, especially when used in a car engine. The low thermal conductance property of plastic fittings allows for balanced temperatures every time a fluid is transported in it.

Plastic pipe fittings are more flexible than their metal counterparts. A plastic pipe fitting is ideal to use in your car because it can be coiled or deflected to fit and match the curve alignments of your car’s engine compartment. It also takes a little time to install plastic pipe fittings. Another thing that’s good about plastic fittings is that they can be readily connected to existing copper or metal pipe lines.

You will also find that plastic pipe fittings are a lot cheaper in comparison to metal pipe fittings. This is because of the difference in the price of metals and plastic resin. Plastic is recyclable in a low cost and effective process, while metal has to go back to the steel mill for reprocessing.

In most automotive conditions, plastic pipes can be fitted or joined by a number of ways. Some of the methods used in joining plastic pipe fittings are solvent cementing, thread joints, mechanical compression joints, and heat fusion. Plastic pipes are also non-toxic and rust proof. Therefore, they only require little maintenance. There’s no scaling or pitting to worry about when you use plastic pipes in your car.

Thermoplastic piping and fittings come in a variety of colors for ease of identification. Each color of the pipes and fittings differs according to their application. Piping with yellow or black with yellow stripes are intended for gas distribution. A pipe with either black, white, gray, light blue or clear color is appropriate to use for water distribution purposes.

Thermoplastic pipe fittings come in various standard sizes based on ASME, ASTM, NIST standards in both inches and millimeter sizes. When purchasing plastic pipe fittings, be sure to note of their sizes. Fittings are larger in diameter in comparison to the pipes. It is important not to interchange the pipes with other pipe fittings to make sure that they fit properly. There are various manufacturers of plastic pipe fittings. As long as you choose a pipe fitting that’s of high quality standard, your car’s engine is good to go.
